Kyoto, December 22nd: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is planning to enhance its collaboration with prominent Japanese universities in its effort to attain the Research University status through innovation.
A delegation from UTM led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang visited Kyoto University and Hiroshima University on the 21st and 22nd of December 2009 to discuss potential collaborations and strengthen ties in several areas of interest.
At Kyoto University, UTM expressed its interest to join a research by Kyoto University researchers regarding ‘Low Carbon Society’ which can contribute significantly to our environmental efforts especially in the Iskandar Malaysia Development Region.
Kyoto University was represented by Prof. Dr. Kiyoshi Yoshikawa, the Executive Vice President, Dr. Junichi Mori, the Vice President and Prof Dr. Shintaro Kobayashi, the Dean of the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies.
UTM is also interested in offering Kyoto University professors to become co-supervisors for UTM PhD students as part of its drive to increase the number of Post Graduate students to balance with the Undergraduates at a ratio of 50:50.
On the other hand, Kyoto University is quite keen in renewing the Japanese Society Promotion of Sciences (JSPS) programme which will expire in March 2010 and is hoping UTM can help to ensure the programme is continued. T
he delegation also paid a visit to Hiroshima University where they were welcomed by its Vice President, Prof. Yamane and a number of its top officials.
A MoU between the two universities is in progress and is scheduled to be signed during the UTM 44th Convocation Ceremony in March 2010.
